ARTIST STATEMENT
My artwork takes a critical view at current social, political and cultural issues. In my work, I engage subjects as diverse as Homosexuality, HIV/AIDS, Health Care, Military Veteran Issues, Infant Mortality, Racism and Capitalism.

Often times I combine these themes into installations that feature real US currency alongside human figures or icons and real objects. These icons are then embellished with 22 k Gold Leaf halos, cultured pearls, semi-precious stones, 18k gold and silver jewelry, the vials of used injectable HIV medications filled with holy water or olive oils. I also use inert bullets, maps, cloth and a myriad of common house-hold objects.

Although I use a variety of materials, my theme and methodology is consistent in each of the art pieces in this series. All the pieces are linked by recurring formal concerns and throughout the subject matter. The subject matter of each piece thus determines the materials to be used and the form the piece will take.

J. NELSON AVIANCE'S NEWLY PUBLISHED BOOK - THREE BY MOONLIGHT (Fiction/Gay)

Press Release For Three By Moonlight

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
You Can't Have Normal When Werewolves Get Involved
J Nelson Aviance makes waves with his anthology of short stories Three By Moonlight: A collection of werewolf tales. His mix of dark urban fantasy themes, sharp whit, and unforgettable characters are sure to appeal.

St. Paul, MN – 05/17/13
 – J Nelson Aviance is a fresh face on the scene. His first title, Three By Moonlight: A collection of werewolf tales, available on Amazon.com, both on Kindle for $2.99 and in paperback for $5.99. This collection of three short stories has the punchy style and well developed characters that should take him far.

Three By Moonlight
explores the lives of three guys struggling to find what it means to be themselves in an often hostile supernatural world. Two of the stories focus on gay teens, one experiencing the pressures of high school and fitting in, the other a runaway trying to reconnect with his past. The third story asks the question, can you hold on to a small piece of normalcy when your life is turned upside down by the supernatural.

Susan Malone of Malone Editorial Services says, “I love his work,” and “Joe has a great writing voice. It’s clear and flowing and in a lot of places, filled with inherent humor—never forced or contrived...The opening to “Brennen and the Wolf” is one of the best I’ve seen in a long time! I literally laughed out loud.”

About the J Nelson Aviance
J Nelson Aviance is a classically trained (opera) singer with a BA in Music and Gender Studies, an MM in Vocal Performance, is currently working on an MA in Musicology and is a member of the House of Aviance. He's been living and creating in fantasy worlds since he was a kid, first with Dungeons & Dragons and Lord of the Rings, now with Urban Fantasy fiction. After college he enjoyed writing Harry Potter fan fiction, then realized one day that he should be writing stories of his own and began a long journey of discovering a new world of shadows.
